The newly branded Windows Live Messenger instant messaging system has been unveiled by software company Microsoft Corp, as part of a suite of online services planned by the company, following a testing period in beta mode.

The system builds on the company's MSN Messenger, which is used by around 240m people at present, and provides free PC-to-PC calls, video conferencing via web cameras and less costly calls to ordinary phones from the PC. The company intends to integrate the new system with other Windows Live services.

Windows Live Messenger features Windows Live Contacts and provides a sharing folder to enable photos and files to be distributed more easily by the user to those on their contact list.

While the majority of Microsoft's Windows Live services remain in the public testing stage, the company intends to introduce over 20 new Windows Live services during the next 12 months. The services include e-mail, social networking, search and mapping, to be incorporated under a single brand to help compete with companies such as Google Inc and Yahoo Inc.
