A transistor that is claimed to run around 100 times faster than existing PC chips has been developed by computer company International Business Machines (IBM).

IBM said the transistor reached a 500GHz speed, which is over 100 times faster than current PC chips and around 250 times faster than the average mobile phone chip. The company reached the fastest speed after cooling the transistor to near absolute zero, but claimed the chip still ran at 300GHz at room temperature.

According to IBM, it has pushed the limits of silicon technology over the last few years. Whereas many chip speed improvements have resulted from reducing the transistor size, IBM has adjusted the silicon on the atomic level, enabling the device to be designed from the ground up.

IBM said the advances are expected to be used in products such as chips used to power super-fast wireless networks within a few years.
