A pair of hackers have won USD13,854 in prize money after succeeding with an attempt to get Windows XP running on an Apple Mac computer.

The competition to see if it was possible to run two operating systems on the same computer, independently, was started by Colin Nederkoorn, a Mac enthusiast, who contributed USD100. It follows Apple's unveiling in January this year of computers using Intel chips, and the prize fund increased as news of the competition spread.

The competition rules stipulated that Windows XP and Apple's OSX must be running on the same machine, with neither operating system causing conflict with the other. The main difficulty encountered by those attempting the task was the way that Windows XP and Apple's OSX start up differently, with PCs and Macs using different technology to load their operating systems.

The winning hackers created a custom copy of Windows XP with modifications made to the installation files in order for it to work with the Apple boot system. The winners have opted to keep their anonymity and are referred to by their 'narf' and 'blanka' handles only. Their success has reportedly been achieved on an iMac, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini.

Walkthroughs have been provided by technical sites such as Ars Technica to allow people to try it for themselves and the software used to win the competition is now in circulation.
