Software company Microsoft has confirmed the basic requirements for computers to be able to run its new Windows operating system, Vista, as well as the higher capabilities needed to obtain maximum benefit.

With the minimum requirements met, the operating system will run, but with some of the new features disabled, while those PCs meeting the recommended specifications will ensure the package's most basic configuration works.

According to Microsoft an 800MHz processor and 512MB system memory meet the minimum requirements, while a 1GHz 32 or 64 bit processor and 1GB system memory are recommended. A DirectX 9 capable graphics card meets the minimum specification, while one running Windows Aero is recommended. Some 128MB graphics memory and 15GB hard drive space are also recommended.

Microsoft has introduced a Vista 'Get Ready' website and has issued a Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to enable users to check that their PC will run the new system. It is due to release Vista for general availability in January 2007, but has not yet provided details about the whether the Intel-based Apple Mac computers will be able to run it.
