Worldwide Computer Products News-23 May 2006-Intel to introduce low-cost desktop computers to India(C)1995-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Chip manufacturer Intel Corp has revealed its intention to sell computers in India that are 20% less expensive than the Intel-based PCs currently available in India with similar configurations.

Intel plans to sell the cheaper computers to boost desktop penetration and usage in the country through the programme, known as 'World Ahead'. It expects to spend USD1bn during the next five years to promote Internet use and computer training in developing markets, aiming to bring high-speed wireless Internet access to 1bn people.

The cheapest desktop computer in India currently costs around INR10,000 and desktop penetration in the country is low due to high prices and the absence of continuous power supply in parts of India. According to Intel the desktop that will be marketed by Indian companies such as Zenith Computers Ltd and Wipro Ltd will be available in two months' time and Intel will work with ICICI Bank Ltd to help enable loans for purchasers.

In addition, Intel will work with Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd, an Indian telecomms company and part of the country's Tata group, to offer wireless broadband connectivity at India's railway stations.
