Worldwide Computer Products News-8 May 2006-Intel Corp names new chips for laptop and desktop computers(C)1995-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Chip manufacturer Intel Corp has officially named the new chips for laptop and desktop computers 'Core 2 Duo', replacing the former names of 'Conroe' and 'Merom'.

The microchips include two processing cores and are reportedly better able to deal with several tasks simultaneously. According to Intel, the chips are faster than previous processors such as its Pentium 4, but use less energy.

Intel Corp also revealed plans to introduce a new premium processor, called the 'Core 2 Extreme', aimed at users seeking high-performance computers.

It is hoped that the chips will boost interest in its products as Intel Corp faces competition from Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD), a competitor manufacturer. Although Intel Corp's microprocessors are used in over 80% of PCs around the world it has been losing market share to AMD.
