The Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), a provider of public infrastructure for the global Domain Name System (DNS), has selected the free and open source Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) from Sun Microsystems Inc (Sun) (Nasdaq:SUNW), a computer technologies company.
The ISC also selected the Sun Fire x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers, which are powered by AMD Opteron processors, as an F-root server, used as one of the 13 root DNS servers which act as the foundation of the Internet.

ISC said almost every Internet transaction, such as finding a website, or sending an e-mail, starts with a DNS query and claimed, with root DNS server presenting a target for hackers, its security requirements are very high.
The Sun 10 OS has been tuned and optimised by Sun to provide performance and mainframe-class reliability on the x64 platform and offers over 600 features for x86 and x64 systems. Customers using Solaris Dynamic Tracing (DTrace), a feature of the Solaris 10 OS, have reported applications running 30 times faster on the Solaris 10 OS.
Applications and services hosted on the Solaris OS for x64 continue to run, with Solaris Predictive Self-Healing, even when CPU, Memory and Disk failures occur.
