Chip manufacturer Intel and German company Siemens have revealed they are to work together to develop new Internet telephony technology.

According to the companies, they wish to build communications systems for corporate customers such as telecomms, digital healthcare and financial services providers. They will work to expand the scope of Internet telephony, which was made popular by Internet telephony company Skype.

The two companies will co-fund research initially, working together in the areas of secure wireless networks and real-time communications based on VoIP. They intend to develop technology based on the HiPath 8000 and OpenScape telecomms technology from Siemens and the dual-core chips and rack-mounted servers of Intel.

Intel and Siemens plan to present their first joint findings at an Intel laboratory in the US by the end of 2006, to certain customers.
