A security patch has been released by software company Microsoft Corp, to fix a 'critical' vulnerability in the company's Internet Explorer web browser.

Microsoft released the patch two weeks prior to its regularly scheduled monthly security update and said it had become aware of a public attack which was using the flaw.

The company claimed the impact of the vulnerability, which could enable an attacker to take control of a user's computer, on customers had been limited.

The flaw has been rated as critical, meaning it could enable an Internet worm to replicate itself through an infected machine without the user having to do anything to the computer.

The vulnerability exists in the coding for Vector Markup Language (VML).
