Worldwide Computer Products News-16 April 2007-Microsoft to stop Windows XP availability on new PCs in 2008(C)1995-2007 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Software company Microsoft has revealed that its Windows XP operating system, including versions made for media centre or tablet PCs, will not be available on new PCs after January 2008.

Microsoft said that PC manufacturers will not be able to purchase licences to install the software on new computers, after 31 January 2008, although they will be able to obtain licences from third party suppliers until 2009. It is retiring the system following the release of its new Windows Vista operating system, for which consumer editions were introduced in Europe in January this year.

Microsoft confirmed that the withdrawal of XP licences holds no implications for long-term product technical support and stated the decision is based solely on availability of new licences for new machines.

In addition Microsoft confirmed that software for early versions of Windows Vista, which do not offer rollback to earlier Windows versions and were downloaded and installed by millions of PC users, will stop working on 1 June.

A recent poll of 2,223 American Internet users conducted by US market research company Harris Interactive found that only 12% of the 87% of respondents who had heard of Windows Vista planned to install it, according to BBC News.
