Worldwide Computer Products News-2 April 2007-Hacienda La Puente school district to issue Dell notebook computers(C)1995-2007 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Notebook computers from computer manufacturer Dell are to be issued to middle and high school students by the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District, near Los Angeles, California, USA, aimed at narrowing the digital divide of the community and increasing student achievement.

Dell Latitude D620 notebooks will be issued for fifth, seventh and ninth grade students this autumn, during the first phase of implementation, for use in classrooms and at home for four years. Students will receive a new notebook in ninth grade, once the programme has been fully implemented, which they can opt to use in college or the work place after they finish high school.

The Dell notebooks will be distributed at designated school gyms over four weekends in August, with 1,900 computers to be distributed this autumn, and a further 2,000 in autumn 2008. Dell notebooks will also be allocated to teachers in the district, who will receive training on how to introduce technology into the curriculum, and parents will be asked to take part in technology sessions and training.

Hacienda La Puente will pay for service for students without Internet access at home, and provide free access to the school district's online learning community, with notebook purchase options being made available at certain stages.
