Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (Samsung), a producer of advanced semiconductor technology, has announced that it has become the first company to start mass production of 16GB NAND flash.

According to Samsung, it will produce the devices, which it claimed are the highest capacity memory chip currently available, in 51nm. It said the 51nm NAND flash chips, which feature a multi-level cell (MLC) structure to enable capacity expansion, can be produced 60% more efficiently than those produced with 60nm process technology.

The company confirmed the new MLC 51nm NAND Flash offers a 30Mb/s read speed and 8Mb/s write speed, compared to 17Mb/s read and 4.4Mb/s write speed (current 60nm MLC) and 33Mb/s read and 13Mb/s write speed (60nm SLC).

Samsung said while the 60nm NAND flash memory features a 2KB page size, the 51nm 16GB version is able to process data in 4KB pages, almost doubling the data rate. It also stated the product maintains the 4 bit error-correcting code (ECC) capability of the 60nm NAND, enabling customers to use current system interfaces with minor firmware upgrades, helping ensure adequate reliability.
