The new 3.5" SpinPoint S166 Series of ultra silent and high-speed hard disk drives have been unveiled by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (Samsung), a digital consumer electronics and IT company.

Samsung said the hard drives will be available worldwide this month, offered in 80GB and 160GB capacities and claimed its SpinPoint S Series provides upgraded versions of its SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies.

According to Samsung, the S166 Series generated 2.4 bel in idle mode and 2.75 bel in seek mode, for the 80GB and 160GB, in comparison to 2.8 bel and 3.2 bel respectively, for competing hard drives, in benchmarking tests. The S166 Series offers a 7,200rpm spin speed, 8MB buffer, SATA 3Gb/s interface and Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and are available with a PATA interface when required.

The series also incorporates fly-height control technology for improved read and write sensitivity and an optimised actuator assembly for single-disk mechanism, improving the disk's mechanical functions and shock characteristics. It also features an upgraded system-on-chip (SoC) controller for enhanced thermal, power consumption and disk data transfer speed.
