A new version of the Windows operating system for mobile devices has been unveiled by software company Microsoft, to be made available in the second quarter 2007.

Microsoft said Windows Mobile 6 has been made to look more like its new Windows Vista operating system and includes features which have previously been available only on PCs.

The system enables users to view e-mails in their original HTML Internet format, with live web links from smartphones, and allows users to view, navigate and edit documents in the original Outlook, Word, Excel or PowerPoint format.

Windows Mobile 6 includes Windows Live, allowing users to instant message with more than one person at a time and send voice notes, files or images, and offers new security features.

The announcement follows the introduction last week of Windows Vista, the company's new personal computer operating system.
