A near final version of the Mac OS X Leopard operating system has been unveiled by computer company Apple, with the final system due to ship in October.

Apple said Leopard offers 300 new features such as a new Desktop and Dock with Stacks to organise files; an updated Finder, which features Cover Flow; and Quick Look to enable most files to be previewed without opening an application. It also includes Time Machine, which backs up and restores lost files automatically; Mac Spaces, which enables groups of applications to be created and switched between; and enhanced iChat and Mail applications for improved communication.

Leopard offers full native 64-bit support, multi-core optimisation and scheduling and Core Animation, which helps developers create animated user experiences in their own applications. Web Clip enables the user to bring content from a webpage to Dashboard as a live widget, while Boot Camp allows Windows to be run natively on Intel-based Macs, and Xray ensures optimised application performance.

Mac OS X version 10.5 Leopard is due to ship in October for a suggested retail price of USD129 for a single user licence, or as a Family Pack single-residence, five-user licence for a suggested retail price of USD199.
