IDC, an analyst researching information technology companies and markets, has revealed that laptops are expected to overtake desktop PCs as the dominant form of computer in 2011.

IDC said the introduction of Windows Vista by software company Microsoft will generate some desktop growth opportunity late this year and early in 2008, after which the desktop PC market will take up a declining growth trend.
Almost 140m desktop PCs and more than 82m portable computers were shipped around the world, last year, representing a less than 2% increase for desktop PCs and a 26.3% increase for laptops, compared to the previous year.
IDC claimed desktop PC demand will increase at a declining rate due to laptop computers becoming faster and more efficient, along with the growth in the mobile workforce and use of wireless networks, according to BBC News.
