Computer company Apple has announced that its Mac OS X Leopard, the sixth major release of Mac OS X, will go on sale on 26 October 2007 at 1800 local time, at Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorised Resellers, with the Apple online store already accepting pre-orders.

Apple said Leopard offers over 300 new features and introduces a new desktop with Stacks, which allows users to access files from the redesigned 3D Dock; and a redesigned Finder to browse and share files between multiple Macs. It also includes Spaces, to create groups of applications and switch between them; Time Machine, for automatic back up; Quick Look, which allows users to see files without opening an application; and iChat, a video conferencing application.

Leopard also offers new features such as improved parental controls, the complete Boot Camp release, enabling Windows to be run natively on Intel-based Macs, Web Clip, new Photo Booth features, an enhanced dictionary, an updated iCal with multi-user calendaring, and an updated version of Front Row.

The Mac OS X version 10.5 Leopard will be available for a suggested retail price of GBP85 inclusive of VAT, for a single user licence, with a Leopard Family Pack single-residence, five-user licence available for a suggested retail price of GBP129 including VAT. It requires a minimum 512MB of RAM and is intended to run on an Macintosh computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867MHz or faster) processor.
