Communications solutions and services provider BT announced on Wednesday (12 September) the launch of wireless solutions provider Research In Motion's (NASDAQ: RIMM) (TSX: RIM) BlackBerry Enterprise Server for the defence and security service sectors at the Defence Systems and Equipment International exhibition.

According to the company, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server enables secure wireless access to e-mail as well as phone and organiser access. In addition to managing policies and access rights, IT decision makers can remotely control, shut-down and wipe any BlackBerry smartphone that has been lost or stolen.

The BlackBerry server is accredited and approved by the Communications and Electronics Security Group (CESG) for the communication of data at the RESTRICTED level and is the only mobile data solution currently approved for use by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD).

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server will be available through Defence Fixed Telecommunications Service (DFTS) delivered by BT on behalf of the MOD. There will be a choice of two smartphones: the BlackBerry 8700v and BlackBerry 8707v. No financial details were disclosed.
