Electronics company Sony has launched its VPL-VW60 BRAVIA SXRD HD1080 video projector.

According to the company, the projector features 35,000:1 contrast ratio, which is achieved by a combination of Sony SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) panels, new optical parts and the Sony Advanced Iris 2 system, where the iris can respond automatically to the overall brightness of each scene. Dark scenes are optimised to bring out details lost in the shadows, while bright scenes do not whiten out. In addition, it includes the 200W UHP (Ultra-High Pressure), which delivers brightness rated at 1000 lumens, yielding enough light for picture sizes up to 300" (7.6m).

The VPL-VW60 is said to offer Anamorphic Zoom function, which uses sophisticated signal processing of widescreen modes together with an optional third-party anamorphic lens to recreate the 2.35:1 CinemaScope aspect ratio seen in the cinema. In addition, it features the ability to handle a 1080/24p input, which means it is fully compatible with original cinematic 24 frames per second content.

The new product belongs to the BRAVIA family and includes the digital BRAVIA ENGINE, which carries out the real-time signal processing that underpins the projector's image quality; as well as BRAVIA Theatre Sync technology, which allows the VPL-VW60 to interoperate with other elements of BRAVIA Home Theatre setup via its twin HDMI connections.

Sony also said that the VPL-VW60 has won an EISA award for the best European Video Projector of the year 2007-2008. The EISA jury reportedly quoted: 'The VPL-VW60's features are impressive; its price is unmissable.'

No pricing details were disclosed.
