Fujitsu Siemens Computers, a European IT provider, announced on Thursday (17 April) that new Quad-Core Opteron processors from AMD (NYSE:AMD), a provider of processing solutions, are shipping in all AMD processor-based PRIMERGY server models, effective immediately.

In addition, the company has introduced an upgrade path for customers who have purchased Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor-powered PRIMERGY servers since March 2007.

According to the company, the PRIMERGY RX330 S1, BX630 S2 and Econel 230R server models, designed to optimise performance when coupled with Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors (codenamed 'Barcelona'), are now shipping with Quad-Core processors. The RX330 S1 and BX630 S2 blade server have been designed for use as stand-alone servers or as part of a server farm in a datacentre, while the entry-level Econel 230R model offers enough local capacity to be used as a stand-alone application server. The machines ship with PRIMERGY ServerView Suite software.

The new AMD Opteron processors have an average compute power (ACP) of 75W and feature improved performance-per-watt over their Dual-Core predecessors. The new PRIMERGY servers are particularly suitable for customers who expect their servers to support anticipated growth in system demand in the years ahead, thanks to increased system headroom from four core processors, Fujitsu Siemens claims.

Later in Q2 2008, AMD expects to introduce Highly Efficient (HE) versions of Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors which have an ACP of 55W, along with a 105W ACP processor for customers who demand the highest raw performance.

No pricing details were disclosed.
