Symantec Corp (Nasdaq: SYMC) a provider of infrastructure software, announced on 10 June that the company's next generation data protection strategy has been evolved. The company stated that a series of product updates to the Veritas NetBackup platform data means management of complete data protection is improved.

Next generation technologies, such as data deduplication and continuous data protection are being integrated to provide improved control from a single solution. Granular recovery capabilities for Windows and VMware environments is also offered by the NetBackup platform

Symantec said that it continues to develop its data protection portfolio in the areas of disk-based backup, virtual machine support, Windows protection, OpenStorage and recovery capabilities through technology interaction between NetBackup and Backup Exec Symantec. Its broad spectrum of customers will benefit from the improved cross-product integration.

According to the company, the updated NetBackup platform enables customers to mange commodity server and storage hardware as one collective grid and to easily scale their data protection storage environment as their businesses develop. Symantec has also added the innovative Granular Recovery Technology, first introduced in Backup Exec, to its NetBackup platform, making it possible to recover an entire system or individual files, e-mails, documents and virtual machines from single-pass image backups of Microsoft Windows, Exchange, SharePoint and VMware servers.

A five system NetBackup starter pack is offered by Symantec at a suggested price of USD3,995

NetBackup 6.5.2 and NetBackup PureDisk 6.5 are available now and NetBackup 6.5.3 will be available in Summer 2008. NetBackup RealTime Protection 6.5 is scheduled to be available later this year.
