CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Satellite system operator INTELSAT has launched its new broadband VSAT (very small aperture terminal) service.

The bandwidth-on-demand system is designed to provide high-speed connectivity for a range of networks - including virtual private networks and star, mesh and hybrid systems - to support customers' wideband application needs such as video-conferencing, multicasting, tele-education and WAN/LAN interconnections. The system can also be used for thin route Internet backbone access.

The service, which offers virtual circuit-based connections starting at 64Kb/s with maximum data rates of 4Mb/s, is available immediately to customers in North and South America, Europe and Africa via the INTELSAT 801 satellite. By mid 2001 the service will be rolled out on three other satellites to provide near-global coverage.
