Companies are looking for IT expenditure to show a clear return on investment, according to new research.

A survey conducted for networking products provider 3Com Corp found that in more than half (57.5%) of the companies contacted, IT investment is recharged to individual cost centres, thereby aligning it to strategic business goals. A total of 71% of companies were looking for further justification of IT expenditure's value to the overall business.

The research was carried out by an independent company which questioned 40 board members from Times Top 1000 companies.

According to 3Com the findings prove that IT solutions need to be marketed as solutions to business problems, with resellers shown how to demonstrate clear return on investment.
