Websense warns over increased number of freeware and shareware web sites

Internet filtering supplier Websense has claimed that the number of freeware and shareware web sites ha increased by 315% over the past year.

The research carried out by the company indicated that there are now 4,300 of these sites representing almost 1.3m web pages.

Websense has issued a warning over the recent rise, claiming that companies may waste bandwidth and IT resources from employees downloading shareware and freeware. In addition, many of the applications may be accompanied by advertising software that tracks Internet use and generates spam or even viruses or Trojan horses.
