Dell ships new four-processor database servers

Computer maker Dell Inc (NASDAQ: DELL) has introduced two new database servers, the Dell PowerEdge 6800 and PowerEdge 6850.

The two servers are based on the new 64-bit Intel Xeon MP (multi processor) and offer DDR2-400 ECC memory and PCI Express I/O, delivering performance that is up to 32% higher than previous Dell four-processor offerings, according to the company.

The PowerEdge 6800 and PowerEdge 6850 support 32-bit and 64-bit database applications and have been validated for Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Database 9i, Real Application Clusters (RAC) and Microsoft SQL Server.

The PowerEdge 6800 will be available for USD3,999 and the PowerEdge 6850 starts at USD4,899.

Dell also announced the release of a new version of its OpenManage systems management software. OpenManage 4.3 is claimed to offer security and change management enhancements, and simplified monitoring capabilities and deployment tools.

Dell OpenManage 4.3 tools are available at no additional charge with most Dell PowerEdge servers.
