The Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Alliance has been established by VMware Inc, a virtualisation software company, providing a technology alliance of hardware, software and service providers.
According to VMware desktops are the most under-used and most difficult to manage IT asset for businesses. It claimed its Virtual Desktop Infrastructure enables IT administrators to host and centrally manage desktop virtual machines in the data centre, while enabling end users to access a full desktop experience from anywhere, at any time.

VMware intends to work with members of the alliance to create, test and integrate joint desktop hosting offerings, based on the partner's hardware or software product and VMware's virtual infrastructure. Customers will reportedly be able to select their preferred partner and implement an enterprise desktop solution to meet business requirements.
Members of the new alliance include Altiris, Appstream, Ardence, ATOS Origin, Check Point Software Technologies, Citrix, ClearCube Technology, Devon IT, Dunes Technologies, Fujitsu, Fujitsu-Siemens, Hitachi, HP, IBM, Leostream, NComputing, NEC, Platform Computing, Propero, Provision Networks, Route1, Softricity, Sun, Wyse Technology and Zeus Technology.
