CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

A new computer server software being tested by software company Microsoft Corp enables corporate customers to make web-based phone calls through the company's Office business software suite.

According to Microsoft, its Office Communications Server 2007, which is due to be released during the April-June quarter next year, will push the company into the business telephone market.

The software enables users to call a contact from within Office applications by clicking on the person's name to start the call. Users will be able to click on the names of colleagues from Office Outlook e-mails to determine the contact's availability in order to make the phone call or arrange a conference call.

Microsoft said the technology will be made available for testing to 2,500 companies prior to the official release next year.
