A turnkey contract for a 4,900km submarine cable network has been signed by communications solutions provider Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris:ALU) (NYSE:ALU) and The East Africa Marine System Ltd (TEAMS Ltd.) consortium - including the Government of Kenya and Etisalat (Emirates Telecom Corporation) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Alcatel-Lucent said the TEAMS network will connect Mombasa, a port city in Kenya, with the port of Fujairah, UAE, providing optical connectivity to bring broadband to all users and helping to lower the cost of Internet connectivity and international calls.

The TEAMS network is designed with an ultimate 640Gb/s capacity and is expected to increase regional communication capabilities substantially. The network installation is expected by the end of the first quarter 2009 and will support new high-quality broadband service, including free Internet for schools and Ethernet-based services to improve social and economic development.

Alcatel-Lucent's managed solution will be based on its 1620 Light Manager next-generation DWDM submarine platform and will include cable and submarine repeaters, with its 1678 Metro Core Connect (MCC) to be deployed in landing stations in Mombasa and Fujairah. In addition, its 1350 management system will supervise the equipment supplied and the services such as project management and installation testing and commissioning will also be provided.
