A new five year voice and data services contract has been awarded to US communications holding company AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) by Andover Public Schools, a public school district which serves over 4,000 students in eight schools in Butler County, USA.

AT&T said it will provide a Switched Ethernet solution to support the implementation of VoIP, widening its current relationship with Andover Public Schools under the terms of the contract.

According to AT&T, its Switched Ethernet service will support the district's high volume voice, video, data and Internet services among buildings in the district, through the public-switched network. It claimed the solution will provide expanded bandwidth for educational applications at each school and support programmes across the network, including podcasts and United Streaming TV.

The solution will incorporate disaster recovery services, ensuring increased network security and redundancy and will support streamlined communications for efficient voice and data network management. AT&T said VoIP services will convert voice calls into data packets, which will allow the district to send and receive calls over a high-speed Internet connection, while VoIP will allow teachers to route calls to different rooms.
