CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2007 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Plans to provide a simple, cost-effective solution to enable businesses to make the move to IP telephony and unified communications easy, have been unveiled by communications solutions provider Nortel (NYSE:NT) (TSX:NT) and computer company IBM (NYSE:IBM).

The solution will combine Nortel's advanced IP telephony and multimedia capabilities with software and hardware from IBM, as part of IBM's unified communications and collaboration strategy.

The companies said the Nortel-IBM System i Unified Communications solution, aimed at SMBs and branch offices, will integrate IBM's System i business computing platform and the IBM Lotus Sametime unified communications and collaboration platform, with Nortel's VoIP and multimedia technologies suite.

The solution will enable users to select the best collaboration method for a particular task, and will deliver advanced telephony plug-ins to Lotus Sametime's unified communication and collaboration tools.

The solution will consolidate VoIP, multimedia collaboration and other business applications onto one scalable System i platform, complemented by SIP clients and enabling connectivity to Nortel's data offering for SMBs. It will integrate with certain e-mail clients and is due to be available initially in the fourth quarter this year.
