A contract for fixed voice and mobile voice and data services has been awarded to BT, a telecomms services and solutions provider, by the Federal State of Saxony, reportedly making Saxony the third state in Germany to source communications from BT on a large scale.

BT said all telephone calls to and from the Saxon Administrative Network (Sachsisches Verwaltungsnetz SVN) used by about 60,000 employees of the state government, will in future be carried via the BT network. BT will install and operate two resilient gateways in Dresden and Leipzig, via which all national and international voice traffic will be routed, with IP-based technology providing the foundation for future migration to IP telephony.

According to BT, the two independent gateways make the solution failsafe, even in times of crisis, which will benefit the police and disaster relief services using the network.

BT confirmed it is also taking over the state's mobile phone contracts, with a total of 5000 employees to use BT Mobile for their mobile phone calls in the future and around 1000 SIM cards to be supplied initially for mobile data applications. BT will provide the state with a single point of contact for all issues, a single bill for all services and expensive call costs when employees phone each other or mobiles or call the SVN fixed network from their mobiles.
