Wireless technology from communications solutions provider Nortel (NYSE:NT) (TSX:NT) has been selected by Belize Telemedia Limited, a telecomms service provider in Belize, to expand its wireless coverage and reach new rural communities in Belize.

Nortel said its wireless technology will replace Belize Telemedia's current GSM infrastructure and deploy a new CDMA 450MHz network, to support the provider's increasing subscriber demand and demand for more advanced products and services.

According to Nortel, the current wireless infrastructure will be upgraded to a Nortel GSM GPRS/EDGE 850/1900MHz wireless network, providing improved network coverage and connectivity for users. The operator also plans to launch a new network based on Nortel CDMA 1xRTT and 1xEV-DO technologies in the 450MHz spectrum, enabling it to extend services and help reduce the communications gap in rural areas.

The network replacement and upgrade also incorporates Nortel's all-IP product line, which includes a new Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture, Mobile Switching Center (MSC) Server and Home Location Register (HLR), along with high-density VoIP Media Gateways.

Belize Telemedia said it is improving the coverage, reliability, capabilities and performance of its wireless infrastructure and providing voice and high-speed Internet service for the more remote and rural locations, helping to boost growth for those local economies.
