CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Communications solutions and services provider BT has revealed it is working with networking solutions provider Cisco to deploy an IP telephony system for the University of Cambridge, UK in a multi-million pound agreement.

BT said is working with Cisco and the university's IT consultancy partner PTS Consulting, to deliver around 20,000 IP telephony handsets to the university during the next 18 months to replace the current system.

The new system will involve the deployment of a converged voice, video and data network and modernise the student experience, allowing them to work in new ways.

BT claimed the system will enable information to be shared more easily, allowing students and academics to use voice e-mails, instant messaging and streaming video to share ideas in real-time from anywhere in the world. This is expected to help improve the quality of education and research.

The project involves meeting the communications requirements of 17,000 users across 200 institutions and is reportedly the largest deployment of its kind, in the sector.
