Drinking and technology do mix

Frontline Solutions, July, 2004

In another testament to the fact that people will do just about anything when they're drunk, both USA Today and The Guardian report that the Baja Beach Club in Barcelona, Spain, has added an unusual payment option for its VIP customers: They can have a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip implanted in their skin to use as an electronic credit card. A registered nurse performs the tagging, which links the often scantily-clad patrons to a line of credit and allows them to dance unencumbered by wallets and purses. The RFID tags, which are about the size of a grain of rice, were supplied by Applied Digital Solutions, which has recently marketed VeriChip to the healthcare industry, an application that also requires registered nurses, but almost never involves tequila shooters.
