New industries embrace RFID

Frontline Solutions, July, 2004

The radio frequency identification (RFID) stampede is reaching new sectors: healthcare, airplane parts, and computer service and support.

MIT's Auto-ID Labs is establishing a research initiative to look into the application of RFID technology in the healthcare industry. The labs will collaborate with EPCglobal, healthcare companies, and industry associations. The group will focus on the information and material flow of pharmaceutical products through the healthcare supply chain, as well as on the integration of sensors, telemetry, and biometrics.

Boeing and Airbus, the world's largest aircraft manufacturers, are now working with suppliers to develop RFID standards for tracking commercial airplane parts. The two companies are sponsoring a series of international symposiums to build consensus among parts suppliers. They've agreed to require Air Transport Association SPEC 2000 automated identification and data capture guidelines.

And finally, the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is launching an initiative to advance the adoption of RFID technology throughout the computer, electronics, and IT industries.

CompTIA has a task force in place to define applications for RFID technology.
