Worm spreads via Bluetooth

Frontline Solutions, August, 2004

Just when you thought it was safe to transmit data via your Bluetooth-enabled cell phone, Russian antivirus software company Kaspersky Labs has verified a network worm that propagates via mobile networks. The worm, called Cabir, infects telephones running the Symbian operating system but does not appear to carry any malicious payload. It is activated each time the phone is started and scans for all accessible phones using Bluetooth networking technology. Kaspersky said the worm was created by a virus writer using the name Vallez, a pseudonym employed by 29a, an international group that specializes in creating proof-of-concept viruses.
