While many vendors have tinkered with the tech behind 802.11 products to achieve proprietary speed boosts from 72 to 108 Mbps, the party line on maximum output for 802.11a and 802.11g specs remains 54Mbps. This might soon change. The IEEE 802.11 Working Group has begun work on a high-performance standard that could potentially boost both 802.11b (now at 11Mbps) and 802.11a standards. Proposals say the new spec, tentatively called 802.11n, could allow for speeds from 108Mbps all the way up to 320Mbps. The new spec is not expected to be completed until 2005 or 2006.
