New Shows On Mtv2 Stick To Music

Cable World,  May 5, 2003

MTV2 is creating new weekend programming blocks for two popular but very different genres of music videos.

Headbangers Ball, once a favorite on MTV, will return on Saturdays at 10 p.m. to present heavy metal music to a new generation of fans. (Speaking of new generations, one of MTV2 show hosts is Jesse Snider, son of Twisted Sister singer and MSNBC announcer Dee Snider.)

Popular bands will sometimes host the new Headbangers Ball, beginning with Metallica when the show premieres May 10.

Sucker Free Sunday will run for eight hours every Sunday beginning at noon on May 11. A different hip-hop star will host the show each week, beginning with one of the hottest rap acts, 50 Cent.

While hip-hop was once too controversial for some marketers, MTV2 general manager David Cohn said that it's an important part of the programming mix. "It's what the kids are listening to. That's why we're programming it and why a lot of advertisers are drawn to it," he said.

Also on Friday night, MTV2 will air Subterranean, a block featuring new music.

With MTV showing few music videos these days, Cohn said that MTV2 programming would continue to be built around music videos and performance programming. "There's no need to create an Osbournes or Real World. We love music videos and other music-related content."

Other new shows coming to MTV2 in the spring and summer are Track 2, in which artists offer behind-the-scenes commentary as their videos play, and Nose Dive, which is about what happens to musicians when their careers go south.
