License-Fee Impact On Gemstar

Cable World, Sept 9, 2002

Byline: JONATHAN BLUM, KAGAN

This week a U.S. regulatory agency ruled against the company over key patents. With 49% of EBITDA coming from revenue based on such patents, the move will hurt Gemstar's bottom line. The company is reacting by touting a study that boasts higher inventory and better retention for IPG advertising and is pushing other valuable properties like TV Guide. Hopefully, it will be enough for Gemstar and its new partner, News Corp., to get the light to shine again.
