My Back Pages: Doing Good, Having a Fine Time!

Cable World,  May 2, 2005

By Paul S. Maxwell

So the snowstorm kept some of us in the mountains an extra day. That's springtime in the Rockies...

You know, packing to come here means two suitcases: one for skiing, one for fishing, golf or tennis. You can usually do one or all on any given spring day. Where I live, when the temperature hits 40 degrees in the spring, we all are in shorts.

This year at SkiTAM, we had it all.

Cloudy, windy, brisk days.

Killington-like snow.

Bright, bluebird days...the sun so bright you couldn't do anything except squint.

Fast course.

Softening snow on a sunny day.

And a heading-home day with a good excuse: almost 2 feet of wet, heavy snow falling from Idaho Springs to east of DIA.

Too bad that didn't fall in the mountains!

Monday, however, was a fine ski day.

All for the U.S. Disabled Ski Team.

Got to ski (and imbibe) with almost a thousand of our closest friends. Got outbid (a dozen times on a dozen different items) at the spectacular silent auction--which raised almost $60K! Bringing donations to the cause to more than $3.5 million since '96.

Skiing with the team members was an awesome and humbling experience. Just trying to imagine the monoskiers balancing took effort...

Amazing to watch them race.

Amazing to share in their smiles and joy at competing.

Amazing to try to keep up!

Our friend and SkiTAM co-founder Trygve Myhren--once a Dartmouth ski racing icon and Cable Center Hall of Famer--has been named "Chef de Mission" to Team USA for the '06 Paralympic Games in Turin, Italy (they follow on the rooster tails of the '06 Winter Olympics Games on NBC, et al).

On top of that, SkiTAM is the first group to be honored with the John J. Clair Jr. award from the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association for outstanding service to the group. And, our friends at October Strategies were recognized with a Communicator Award of Distinction and a Business Marketing Association honor for their work on SkiTAM.

So, why weren't you there?

I'll bet as many "deals" were done in the snow (or bars) at Vail as were done at Moscone Center in San Francisco earlier that week!
