HBO, the cream of the crop of pay networks, was the only pay group to deliver an increase in its wholesale rate in 2002, up 3.7% to $5.08 vs. $4.90 in 2001. While the HBO/Cinemax group may not be increasing its subscriber base as quickly as the Showtime and Starz groups, the network has managed to limit discounting. But the Starz group managed to return the strongest total cash flow growth of all pay nets - up 18.5% to $371 mil. That also translated into the greatest improvement in cash flow per sub, up 5.5% to 92 cents.
