NEW FACES IN ADELPHIA'S TECH, ENGINEERING DEPT.

Adelphia Communications has introduced some new blood to its technology and engineering department. Last week, the MSO announced that Tom Buttermore had been named VP, data engineering and operations; Keith Hayes had been tapped for the position of VP, network planning and construction; and Doug Ike had been selected VP, advanced video engineering and product development. The announcement was made by Marwan Fawaz, Adelphia SVP and CTO, to whom all three appointees will report.

Comcast has migrated the majority of its former AT&T Broadband HSD subs to its new Comcast.net domain, the company announced last week. A small number of customers experienced delays in receiving e-mail during the migration, although the transition has been far less frantic than the December 2001 Excite@Home switcheroo. Comcast boasts over 4 million HSD subscribers.

COURT RULES FOR S-A IN LATEST GEMSTAR IPG FLAP

Scientific-Atlanta has won another battle in its long-standing interactive program guide (IPG) patent war with Gemstar-TV Guide International. S-A, which, among other things, manufactures the SARA IPG for its own line of Explorer digital set-tops, announced that a Georgia court has granted a motion for summary judgment against Gemstar. The court ruled that S-A's boxes do not infringe on two Gemstar patents, and that Gemstar may not bring new claims against S-A under the two same patents.

BREAKING THE $50 BARRIER

The magic number that cable modem manufacturers are striving for is now 50, which is to say, $50 per unit. The latest vendor to reach that milestone is SMC Networks, which has announced the launch of its sub-$50 SMC8004CM modem. The DOCSIS 2.0-capable unit comes with Ethernet and USB hubs.

CABLELABS OKs TANDBERG

Tandberg Television said that CableLabs has given the thumbs-up to its MPEG-2 encoders for digital ad insertion. The equipment enables operators to splice local ads and/or promos directly into digital network feeds.
