Competition to become an early leader in the softswitch market for cable-delivered voice over IP has been fierce. Upstarts and specialists such as Syndeo, Cedar Point, Nuera and Gallery IP have been jockeying for position with giants including Cisco, Siemens and Nortel, betting their agility will win out over established might. Moreover, the combatants are fighting for a relatively small pie. Siemens and Cisco both landed early victories domestically with Cablevision and Time Warner respectively, but there is still plenty of territory up for grabs, and most MSOs will tap multiple vendors.
