It's Not Without Risk

NBC's deal to swallow Vivendi Universal combines enviable entertainment assets with broad distribution channels. The addition of USA and Sci Fi to the NBC family of cable networks should prove useful in spreading the pain of rising network costs, but it's not without risks. Repurposing hits has worked for networks such as Fox, but the benefits drop dramatically when a cable channel is treated like a dumping ground for less-popular content. Repetition can also be dangerous if it raises flags among cable and satellite operators that are paying multiple licensing fees for essentially the same content.
