VOD Via Comcast, Primedia

Cable World,  Dec 16, 2002

Byline: JON LAFAYETTE

Comcast Cable will add video versions of several Primedia magazines to its VOD offering in Philadelphia. The Primedia Video Magazine Rack competes with Rainbow Media's Mag Rack VOD product carried by Cablevision Systems and Insight Communications.

Primedia will continue to supply content to Mag Rack, according to Primedia CEO Tom Rogers.

In a statement, Matt Strauss, EVP and GM of Mag Rack, said, "given Mag Rack's rapid growth, we expect that Primedia will be only the first of a series of new participants."

Rogers said his company had advantages in the business because it was using branded enthusiast magazines, had lower production costs and offered strong marketing support, based on the company's database of 60 million people cross-referenced by hobby.

He also said he expected that some advertisers in Primedia's enthusiast publications will sponsor the video versions as well.

"The future of television is video-on-demand," Rogers said. "Given Comcast's huge role in the industry, it says something about how a company like ours can contribute to the whole economic formula."

The Primedia product will launch with video versions of eight publications including Motor Trend, Parenting Basics, TeenNews, Adventure Sports and Arts & Crafts.

Primedia publishes Cable World.
