TV journalists spar over spot

Cable World, Nov 27, 2000

It's not just politicians fighting in Florida.

Fox News Channel anchor Shepard Smith, one of the swarm of reporters covering the recount battle, hit a local cable news reporter with a car in a dispute over a parking spot, according to news reports.

Smith, who anchors FNC's 7 p.m. Fox Report, was trying to park his car in a space amid the satellite trucks ringing the state capitol Nov. 17 when Maureen Walsh, a freelancer working for Bay News 9, said she was saving the spot for her colleagues.

Smith cursed at her and hit her with the car, a white Mazda Millenia, she told police, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Walsh was released from a local hospital with bruises on her knees and legs.

Smith, who spent much of his early career at TV stations in Florida, was charged with aggravated battery with a motor vehicle and released on $10,000 bail from the Leon County Jail.
