Super choices on cable

Cable World, Jan 22, 2001

Still not convinced about Trent Dilfer or Kerry Collins? Defense doesn't turn you on? Well, given that the Baltimore Ravens' and N.Y. Giants' victories in their respective conference title games produced the lowest numbers since the inception of large-market overnight ratings in 1987, more viewers than usual may be looking for an alternative to Super Bowl XXXV.

Cable is providing some pigskin-free programming, aimed largely at reaching female audiences Jan 28. Comedy Central will present a stand-up marathon of comediennes, while A&E will send Angela Lansbury to the line down after down, with a dozen hours of Murder She Wrote. TBS, eschewing its "regular guy" image, is touting "Hand Over the Remote Sunday" by showcasing such female-oriented films as Steel Magnolias, Prince of Tides and Selena. HGTV will kick off its "Super Sunday of Styles" from 7-10 p.m, airing out new episodes of such shows as Kitty Bartholomew, Room by Room and Kitchen Design, as well as a special, Defining Style, that will take watchers inside the homes of Willow Bay and Diane von Furstenberg. Lifetime will air a number of films on Super Sunday. However, the leading women's network gets in the gridiron game with NFL Stories Straight from the Heart on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
