DSPs SPEED AHEAD

Texas Instruments introduced two programmable digital signal processors (DSPs) intended to speed the development of personal wireless multimedia Internet appliances. The first DSP will deliver 10 times the performance of today's fastest technology, operating at speeds up to 1.1 GHz and computing nearly nine billion instructions per second (BIPS). The chip is intended to enhance broadband voice, video and data delivery. The second DSP requires only 15% of the power of today's typical units, yet delivers five times the performance. The low power extends battery life and helps create a new generation of battery-dependent Net appliances such as portable phones, digital music players and digital cameras with a constant on-line Net link. The new DSPs are called "cores," with multiple chips available from each core. The devices should ship in Q2 this year, with products available to consumers next year.

ADELPHIA GOES WITH C-COR

Adelphia has ordered $33M worth of broadband network technology from C-Cor.net to support new and existing rebuild/ upgrade projects in systems in Florida, Pennsylvania and New England. C-Cor will be supplying both 750 and 862 MHz distribution line equipment for near-passive networks to deliver data, video and voice services.
