Unilever buys tomato group …

Anglo-Dutch giant Unilever has agreed to buy the tomato products operations of Greek food manufacturer Melissa-Kikizas for an undisclosed sum. Melissa is well known in Greece for its Pummaro and Pelargos tomato product brands which generate annual turnover of Hfi48m (ECU21.7m). The operations, including a processing plant in the Pelopennese, will be run by Unilever's Greek subsidiary, Elais.

Melissa's other food products, such as pasta, will be retained by the Greek group. Unilever already owns tomato processing groups in Chile, Brazil, the US and India.
