… but closes ice cream plant

Eurofood, Dec 3, 1998

Meanwhile, Unilever has announced that it will close the Algida ice cream plant in Patras next summer. The plant employs 50 permanent staff. Unilever Hellas is negotiating the sale of the unit to an Italian company, which is prepared to take on Algida' s staff, according to Greek press reports. The closure follows a number of similar cutbacks by Unilever over the last couple of years; it follows the fate of the units in Austria, Belgium and Denmark, while the number of production units in France and the Netherlands has been reduced.

Production will be transferred to larger units, such as the one in Italy, which in turn will supply the Greek market after the closure of the Patras plant.
